Half-Day Excursions (Duration: 4 hours)
Knossos Palace - Archaeological Museum (open 01/08/07) - Heraklion Town

 

Start the day by visiting the famous Minoan Palace of Knossos, which was built 4,000 years ago, and is located about 6 km south of the city of Heraklion. It is a fine sample of the Minoan history, and the first high-level European civilization. From there you will be taken to Heraklion town, where you can see the Loggia and the elaborate fountain, called "Lions". South of the Loggia is the Basilica of Saint Marcus which was built in 1239 in the PIAZZA DELLE BIADE (Square of Blades) and used to be the Cathedral of Crete. Nowadays it houses the Municipal Art Gallery.
Tour in the City: The central market and the shops in Heraklion are among the most diverse in Crete. Visitors can easily find souvenirs, jewellery, furs, food, and clothes. Famous Cretan products such as oil, wine, raki (spirit), honey and herbs are really worth tasting and buying.

Heraklion Town - Archanes (Unesco) - N. Kazantzakis Museum

 

West of Heraklion, there is the Cretan History Museum, where the riches of the Christian, Byzantine, Medieval and earlier times are preserved for all to see. There are also many objects d'art and examples of famous Cretan culture through the ages. These include works of art by the great painter EL GRECO, who was born and studied painting in Heraklion itself. In addition, visitors have the chance to see a typical Cretan house as well as memorabilia of the great author, Nikos Kazantzakis. The next stop is the Unesco cultural Monument - Archanes. This beautiful traditional village overlooks the Giouhtas Mountain and has many nice cafes in the heart of the main square. Here you can have a drink before heading to Nikos Kazantzakis Museum, which is dedicated to the great Greek writer, poet and philosopher. It was founded in 1984 and it is located in the village Myrtia.
The museum contains some of his personal belongings (pipes, glasses, pens, etc.) and a rich collection of his manuscripts and letters, first Greek editions of his books, documents from theatrical productions of his works, copies of TV series and movies based on his novels, portraits of Nikos Kazantzakis, copies of press releases and articles on his life and work.

Fodele (El Greco's House) - Bali - Rethymno

 

Fodele is built in an area of orange groves and, according to the historians; this was the site of the ancient town of Astali, which was the port of ancient Axos. In Fodele visit the El Greco Domenikos Theotokopolous (1541 to 1614) House and Museum. The next stop is a pleasant village with a small harbor, a beach, a monastery and an old fountain called Bali. From there you will visit Rethymno, a small Mediterranean town that will enchant you with its centre dating from the period of the Renaissance, its fortress and museums as well as its beaches.

Crete Aquarium "Thalassocosmos" (Duration: 3 hours)

 

The HCMR (Hellenic Center for Marine Research) Aquarium in Crete is a meeting point where science, discovery and recreation are equally accessible, designed to serve the needs of a wide range of visitors and user groups. More than 2500 individuals of fish and invertebrates, 200 Mediterranean species in numerous tanks representing underwater Cretan landscapes, and 2 sharks are sure to entertain the whole family.

Fodele (El Greco House) - Rethymno (Monastery Arcadi) - Chania

From there you will visit Rethymno, a small Mediterranean town that will enchant you with its centre dating from the period of the Renaissance, its fortress and museums as well as its beaches.
The next stop will be Chania. A city with ancient and modern monuments, a Venetian Harbour, colourful neighbourhoods, a traditional lifestyle and friendly inhabitants.
You will also visit the Monastery of Arcadi which was a refuge and centre of resistance for revolutionaries under Ottoman rule. The original fortress complex of the monastery was built in the 19th century, but most of the buildings date from the 18th. It combines Gothic & Renaissance features and is a typical example of monastic architecture in the last years of the Venetian rule.

Elounda - Plaka - Aghios Nikolaos - Kritsa (Full Day)

 

Guests will start their day with a tour around Elounda. An international and cosmopolitan resort area, located to the north of Aghios Nikolaos, with an indented coastline, shaded beaches, crystal clear seas, and a tranquil and heavenly environment. It is located in a 10km distance from Aghios Nikolaos, and the coastal drive allows visitors to admire the spectacular view of Mirambello Gulf and Korfos. Agios Nikolaos is our next destination with its most charming feature; the lake. A walk around the shops of Agios Nikolaos is an enjoyable experience. The visitor can find a wide selection of traditional Cretan artwork, copies of pieces from different archaeological museums, jewellery, and embroidery.
Kritsa is a unique community of people with their own cultural progression, their own tradition, and their own local dialect. It is the typical paradise of living local tradition in Crete, and moreover, the village still maintains a significant proportion of older unchanged architectural facades.

Ag. Nikolaos - Sitia - Moni Toplou - Vai (Palm Tree Beach) Full day 12 hrs.

 

Agios Nikolaos is the first stop on the way to Vai Beach. The following destination will be Sitia where guests can see marks of ancient civilisations such as the remarkable Minoan Palace at Zakros.
Next will be the visit to Moni Toplou which literally means "Monastery with the gun", thus named by the Turks because it had in its possession a small cannon.
The monastery was founded in the 15th century but was devastated during the earthquake of 1612 and it was rebuilt by the Venetians. It is built high on a rugged plateau on the way to Vai, and its architecture resembles a fort due to the fact that throughout history it had to defend itself from bandits, pirates, and invaders. From there guests will visit the unique Vai palm-forest which lies 92 km east of Agios Nikolaos and occupies an area of 250 square km. It is a tropical landscape which is an exception in Greece. Its unique beauty is reminiscent of tropical locations, as 5,000 palm-trees extend for two miles and reach the beautiful golden beach which attracts scores of swimmers in the summer. It is the largest known palm-tree forest throughout Europe.
